Artist Statement

Allie Stabile makes large, abstract paintings of landscapes to navigate space in relation to self, structure, and boundary.  She creates the physical elements of her environment through layers of acrylic, newspaper, fabric, and enamel that are ripped and scraped from the surface to express the exterior deterioration of buildings.  Hard-edged lines are interrupted by assertive waxy scrawls and allusions of infrastructure to show the reconstruction of space and the transformation of oppressive structures. Naively drawn grids act as both window frames and barriers to past layers of acrylic and oil in order to challenge the limits of perception, and to express a space beyond one’s environment.  Through her work, Stabile posits an awareness of the relationship between the humanly structured and the imagined abstract.

Originally from Carlisle, PA, Stabile received her B.A. in Philosophy from Salve Regina University in Newport, RI in 2014.  Prior to attending Pratt Institute, Stabile has curated past exhibitions at the Army Heritage and Education Center (AHEC) located in Carlisle, PA and has published an exhibition catalogue.  Since moving to New York, she has participated in artist residencies, such as COPE NYC (Creating Opportunities Promoting Equality), and has exhibited locally within Brooklyn, including Pratt Institute’s “Half-Life,” exhibition in Dekalb Gallery.
